The “Catering Barn”
Our very versatile “Catering Barn” which also is our storage shed and bathroom addition started life as a dairy barn. Life on a homestead was tough, and the family had to grow and raise all their own food. Trips to town were rare and only for special items like flour, sugar and coffee.

“ The need for staples required semi-annual trips to Leavenworth. These trips became much easier when around 1910 they could travel to Winton and ride the train to Leavenworth instead of going over Beaver Valley hill in a buckboard. Usually, several families would join and send a family member on the trips. Lucky was the person selected for the trip.
Medical and dental problems also required a trip to Leavenworth, but only if the problem couldn’t be fixed at home. Minor cuts could be stitched, and bad teeth removed by George”

“Hunting season depended upon the family requirement for fresh meat. One of the first fences built was around the garden to keep out hungry deer. Members of the family, including all the girls, were capable of shooting marauding deer, bear, hawks and eagles. Bear were especially troublesome in the young orchard. They would break down and destroy cherry and apple trees.”
